They are now marketing this film as an intentional comedy. That was not the original intention of the director and star. Has to be seen to be believed. Many are calling Wiseau the "next Ed Wood".

A shot-on-video cheapie (when shot-on-video was a true rarity) from the golden age of the slasher genre. This one actually had a limited theatrical run but some reports say it was originally supposed to be a comedy but was edited into a straight slasher/horror pic by distributors.

This was given a DVD release by Code Red so it's available to be seen by grindhouse freaks the world over.

Hilarious trailer with some truly bizarre scenarios and imagery. Enjoy.

Basket Case (1982)

Way before Slimer loved hot dogs in Ghostbusters, there was Belial!!

And just like America, he also loved burgers (see one post below), tinfoil and all.

Basket Case is an absolute classic and a great starting point for anyone getting into grindhouse or exploitation cinema. Henenlotter grew up on 42nd street in New York and got his education in the famously run-down theatres and it shows in his first film, Basket Case. It is, at times, hilarious, disturbingly gross and, above all, eternally memorable.

Has to be seen to be believed.

While the Burger King commercial below projects a fantasized America, Basket Case is its true spiritual opposite. The American Dream is not possible in Henenlotter's film where call-girls, drunks and freaks find themselves sandwiched together in a seedy hotel with nothing to do but get through the night without getting killed.

Student Bodies (1981)

Directed by Mickey Rose.

Starring Kristen Riter and Richard Belzer.

Probably the first outright horror parody, pre-dating stuff like Scream and Scary Movie by a decade and a half.

By the trailer, you can see that this was inspired by the previous years "Airplane". Mickey Rose, who wrote and directed, was once part of Woody Allen's team and co-wrote many of the early screwball comedies of Allen's career.

The parallels to today are striking. We are now seeing a slasher renaissance in Hollywood and soon enough we will be seeing the parody films in their wake. Student Bodies was released in reaction to the major success of films like Halloween and Friday The 13th from the first slasher wave.

The next Scary Movie is probably already on it's way.

This movie also features a scene that is strikingly similar to the opening of the first Scream film. It's probably no coincidence.

The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

This is a staple of the 80's video rental days and this spent a lot of time in my VCR as a kid. Plus, it's a hell of a trailer.
